Johny and his Mom at a young age gathering pumpkins
As a young 8 year old Child I remember getting dropped off at the family farm on Portage Trail to mow grass. I would drive a small tractor to cut the grass and I loved it from the start. After getting done with the farm either my Mom or my Dad would pick me up and then take me to my other Grandparents house to mow at Portage Lake Estates. The work there was a little different as I had to use a push mower but I always got the job done well. As time went on I would add homes to my route including my Uncles house and my parents house. My Dad had a strong Firewood business and that also meant that I was splitting firewood all summer long to help. Splitting firewood was never easy but I grew to appreciate it. Why who doesn't like to sit next to a nice fire in January when its 20 degrees outside?
By the time I was in high school at St. Vincent St. Mary I had established a mow route that consisted of 20 yards and to this day I still mow many of them! By the time I was a senior in high school clients started asking if I could do leaf clean ups. I of course agreed and the first yard I did a leaf clean up at was on Merriman rd. Back then my buddies and I used rakes. What a job that was! There was so many trees back then on that road. So eventually I purchased a backpack blower as my cliental grew.
Soon the clients wanted Mulch to enhance their yards after the long Ohio winters. I would spend three solid months mulching yards and keeping weeds at bay. As people started noticing the work I was putting in there requests grew to also wanting trees, shrubs, plants and much more. I eventually had the idea to start a garden center which we opened in the fall of 2020. I started with pumpkin sales but the sales were slow so I told myself we need something else. Back then a lady named Mrs. Urbank sold small Mums so I pulled in to ask her if I could buy fifty of them, She asked why do you need so many? I told her that I wanted to try and sell them here on State Rd. She gladly sold them to me and I drove them to the garden center and within one hour of setting them up a customer pulled in and asked if we had mums. I smiled real big and said , "we do now".
The garden center then turned into selling live Christmas trees, wreaths, garland, and more. Then the spring brought Pansies and hanging baskets.
